A weekend potter and brunch in Muswell Hill and Highgate Woods
I lived in North London for over six years, and although I recently moved south, the gorgeous area around Muswell Hill and Highgate still holds a special place in my heart.
For a perfect weekend afternoon, start by grabbing a bite to eat. There are plenty of restaurants and cafés along Muswell Hill Broadway, but one of my favourite spots for brunch is a small mediterranean restaurant called Cilicia. The menu offers a great variety of hot and cold mezze and plenty of options for vegetarians, plus I love the décor. All the Turkish lampshades hanging from the ceiling make me feel like I’m on holiday.
Afterwards, head for the many quirky, independent boutiques in the area. I recommend Crocodile Antiques for gifts and homewares and Leila for pretty dresses, jewellery and scented candles. Foodies will love Cheeses and W. Martyn, an old fashioned grocery store that has changed very little since the 1930s. Vintage, retro and recycled lovers should not miss Cha Cha Cha, a little gem of a shop hidden above a studio space in arty Avenue Mews.
Shopped out, I recommend a walk in nearby Highgate Wood. This lush, ancient woodland is like a little piece of countryside in the heart of the city – it always makes you feel refreshed. When you’re ready to return to the city, exit the wood at Gipsy Gate and head for cool North London hangout The Boogaloo. They have a great jukebox so you can select your favourite song and relax with a nice drink.
